TIM CHAMBERLAIN artist & writer
born 1977 in the scottish borders, tim chamberlain gained an honours degree in zoology from university of bristol which involved a student expedition to the wild lands of northern bolivia.
for the next few years whilst living in cumbria, fife, orkney and scottish borders he turned his hand to many things including surveying for the rspb, working as a group educator for the mammal society and the scottish deer centre, creating complex garden designs in st. andrews and serving ales as a barman in the orkney isles. he also spent six weeks as artist-in-residence at chester zoo.
an art foundation at falmouth college of art, cornwall led to the fine art degree and following year, an exchange with sir wilfred grenfell college, corner broo, on the wild island of newfoundland was an immersion amid a poetic, practical and charismatic people. it was there he was introduced to film and appeared on local tv where part of his docu-film ‘penstocks’ was aired across the province of newfoundland and labrador.
an ensuing residency was offered by the pilgrim family in st. anthony’s bight in extreme nw newfoundland. a series of lens based and sculptural works were produced and a collection of ninety-six sculptural pieces were exhibited back in sir wilfred grenfell college.
under the expert critical eye of tutor rob wood at falmouth college of arts, cornwall, tim achieved a first class ba (hons) degree in fine art in 2006.
on graduating from falmouth he worked as workshop tutor and volunteer for a series of art workshops at penlee house as part of newlyn art week, as mentor on university college falmouth’s ‘widening participation youth summer school,’ and also at the centre for contemporary art and the natural world (ccanw) where he also assisted artist heike rindt.
now based in the scottish borders he is currently undergoing an intensive research period involving a series of map-based works, walking the land, a drawing series entitled ‘constructions’, and further exploring concepts of nature through sculpture and photography.
